Here is a question that I get asked a lot.
Is there an art curriculum that teaches about an artist and then gives directions to do a project in the style of that artist?
Yes, there are several out there but I want to share with you a great new book that does just what you are looking for and it has a nice affordable price tag.
I just received The Usborne Treasury of Art (ISBN 0-7945-1452-9) from Amazon.com for about $13. It has 22 artists and their paintings and it looks like a little over half of them are from the 20th century.
The book has a two page spread of a piece of the artist’s work along with a short biography and description of the painting. The next two page spread is an art project that either is based on the painting or the theme or idea of it. There are multiple mediums included in the projects in this book such as: watercolor, collage, oil pastels, ink, chalk, sponge painting and more.
A few of the artists included in the book are Van Gogh, Picasso, Matisse, Money, Degas, and O’Keeffe. The book also gives a list of the needed supplies to complete the projects in the book. I can see where this book could easily give a homeschooling mom the basis for a whole year’s worth of art appreciation and art acitivities for a variety of ages. I would suggest using the book with children ages 8-12. Of course you can adapt the projects easily for older or younger students.
Check your library or put it on your wishlist.
