Listen to Schubert’s “Der Wanderer” (D. 493) and view the slideshow of paintings by Caspar David Friedrich. This piece of music was written in October 1916. I don’t often pick selections with a vocal accompaniment but this is quite dramatic with the words and visuals.
I enjoy listening to Franz Schubert in my free time and I find his style very easy for even beginning music appreciation students. Listen to this week’s piece and make sure you identify the three instruments in the trio for your children. How knows? Maybe they will be inspired to take up that instrument in the future!
I love the sound of the flute and this video selection will allow you to see one of the world’s foremost flute players perform a selection from Schubert. It is a little longer than my normal featured piece but well worth the time invested. I hope you enjoy!
If you would like to learn more about specific instruments of the orchestra, my Harmony Fine Arts Grade 5 plans have a complete year of instrument study along with an introduction to popular classical composers. Please take minute to pop over and download the sample and resource list to see if this year plan would help organize a year’s worth of music appreciation for your family.
