Week 2

Art Appreciation: Medieval and Renaissance Art and Music

Option 1: Picture Study

  • View Life of St. Francis, Renunciation to Wealth using the link provided.
  • Print the image for your notebook if you wish using the instructions included in the ebook. Also you can add to your artist notebook page that you started in week 1.

Option 2: Art Appreciation with Follow-Up Activities

(2 short periods or one longer period of time each week)

  • Read Renaissance pages 10-13.
  • View: History for Kids – Giotto and the Giotto slideshow on YouTube. Record additional information to your artist notebook page from Week 1. (I always recommend previewing all YouTube links for appropriateness for your family.)
  • Complete Draw Squad Lesson 1: Foreshortening.
  • View Life of St. Francis, Renunciation to Wealth. Observe the building’s shapes and angles.
  • Draw some of the buildings shown in the Life of St. Francis for your drawing notebook, applying what you learned in the Draw Squad lesson.

Option 3: Artistic Pursuits with American Art

(Note: This option does not correspond with the Medieval and Renaissance history cycle.)

(2 short periods or one longer period of time each week)

  • Continue Unit 1 Artistic Pursuits Grades 4-6 Book 2 (The Color Wheel).
  • Complete the Unit 1 Final Project using watercolor pencils.
  • File your work in your art notebook and use the evaluation sheet at the back of the Artistic Pursuits book to evaluate your work (if desired).
  • Optional assignment is to choose one of Giotto’s paintings and reproduce it using watercolor pencils. Practice the steps from the Artistic Pursuits lesson.

Please Note: Many families combine Option 1 with either Option 2 or 3. You can choose from week to week how much to include in your lesson.

Week 2 Music Appreciation:

Antonio Vivaldi

  • Continue listening to Story of Vivaldi and Corelli. Review last week’s track and this week listen to track #14 (Winter).
  • Continue working on your listening log and notebook page.
