Once a Month Art Supply- Coloring Books

Coloring Books for Adults @harmonyfinearts

The adult coloring book craze is everywhere! I even saw some interesting books at my grocery store this week! Our family has been using Dover Publications coloring books for many years in our homeschooling artist study and for free time recreation. You can find my review and tips for using Dover Publications coloring books here in this entries: Dover Coloring Books.

Here are my favorite coloring books that I go to over and over. I am hoping these selections help you get started. Now with the many quality adult coloring books available, it is easy to offer amazing opportunities for everyone in your family to enjoy some relaxing fun using the art media of your choice.

Confession: I have become a little addicted to watching episodes of all my favorite Food Network shows online. I may not be much of a cook but I am inspired to be better by all the great chefs I watch. Keeping my hands busy while I watch (or listen) helps me not feel too guilty about taking this time for myself. This is where I learned to cook Tequilla Lime Chicken while coloring with pencils.

Impressionist Art MasterPieces @harmonyfinearts

Impressionist Art Masterpieces to Color

I especially like the way these designs are printed on only one side of the paper so you use markers or watercolors without worrying that you are ruining the design on the backside. Every painting included in the book has a full color image on the cover of the book to guide you in recreating your masterpiece.  Impressionist Art Masterpieces to Color is included in Harmony Fine Arts grade 1 (option 3) plans!

This is my most used coloring book of all time. All of us in our family have enjoyed the selection of paintings included in this book. The pages are printed on one side only just like the Impressionist book. You can see more of our Dover Publications coloring pages here in this Flickr Set: Dover Coloring Book Pages.

Simple Blessings: Coloring Designs to Encourage Your Heart

I have been working in this book since October and I find it very calming. The simple designs and sayings are an encouragement to me and to those I give the final products as gifts. Sharing these pages seems only natural.

My daughter has also been working on her own adult coloring book projects. It looks like she prefers Sharpie pens to create your artwork.

Amanda said that both of these pages are from a book she found at Target. She found the link to the product on Amazon: Floral Wonders | Color Art for Everyone

Once a Month Art Supply – Chalk Pastels

Chalk Pastels Art Supply @harmonyfinearts

This month I am going to be sharing an art supply that I have historically had a love/hate relationship with as an artist. Let’s just say with the right instruction I have come to appreciate the versatility and the vibrant colors that you can achieve with chalk pastels. A big part of my training has come from Tricia Hodges and her mom, Lucia Hames. They have created art tutorials for chalk pastels that show just how easy and fun they can be for artists of all ages…more on that below.

Which chalk pastels do I use?

Reeves Soft Pastels – set of 36 (ASIN B000UNRNXY)

I have a set of Reeves soft pastels…which I learned that soft pastels and chalk pastels are the same. These are so reasonably priced that you could buy a set for each child because I know when I used them with my kids they would get upset if another person broke their pastel or sort of mixed the colors by blending. I say give each person their own box and don’t let the topic of contention even come up.

I have always used pastel paper with our chalk pastels but I know that Tricia and Lucia work most of their projects on plain printer paper. I would recommend working with both until you figure out which gives you the results you like best.

There have been several chalk pastel projects here on Harmony Fine Arts that I will include links to here in this entry.

I created two YouTube videos for beginning chalk pastel users. These two videos actually go along with my Harmony Fine Arts plans for year 4 but they are applicable to anyone who just needs a little nudge to get started. I hope you find them helpful and give you the confidence to give chalk pastels a try.

Art for All Ages

I have shared some of our art work done after viewing the chalk pastel video tutorials and the instruction in the Southern Hodgepodge ebooks….much can be accomplished by watching and learning from a master artist.  Prang Semi Moist Watercolors review @harmonyfinearts

In November, I am featuring the Prang Semi-Moist Watercolors as my art supply of the month. These are paints that our family has used for many years and are our preferred watercolors for all kinds of artwork.

Prang Oval Pan Watercolor Set, 16 Classic Colors with No. 9 Brush

Prang Semi Moist Watercolor set of 16 classic colors

I purchased a brand new set of 16 to inspire some watercoloring during the winter months to come.

Edit to add my affiliate link to Amazon.com.

  • Portability! These make taking art projects outside or on a nature walk super easy. Just open add a brush and a little container of water and you are all set.

Prangs Semi Moist Watercolors art projects and review @harmonyfinearts

  • The vivid color you can achieve using these paints makes them a great choice for your art projects.
  • The colors blend and layer well and for mixing you can do that right in the lid of the paint set.

  • The price of these paint sets makes them a frugal choice even for children who use lots of paints.
  • Colors in the set of 8: black, brown, blue, purple, red, yellow, orange, green.
